Protection, Rights, Inclusion in Displacement and Emergencies

The International PRIDE Centre

Extraordinary danger in the face of extreme vulnerability: When LGBTQIA+ people are forced into displacement as refugees or internally displaced persons because of conflict, crisis, and climate emergencies, they become some of the most vulnerable people in an already volatile and dangerous situation.

The International PRIDE Centre: Protection, Rights, Inclusion in Displacement & Emergencies works with SOGIESC communities in some of the environments where is most dangerous to identify as LGBTQIA+. In these environments, many queer people face the constant threat of arrest, violence, extortion, forced sex work, and even murder, simply because of their identity. Often, just accessing such basic lifesaving assistance such as food and medical assistance can be out of reach because of these risks.

Yet within these spaces, LGBTQIA+ civil society remains vibrant and resilient, adopting innovative approaches to provide assistance to their communities in the face of exceptionally difficult circumstances.

We work with and learn from these local groups, refugee-led and civil society organisations, alongside engaging international aid actors to ensure that aid and assistance can reach LGBTQIA+ persons in need. We advocate to make certain that development, humanitarian, and emergency response programmes explicitly acknowledge and include the unique and specific needs of SOGIESC communities. We work toward achieving systemic changes to global humanitarian and coordination structures to entrench LGBTQIA+ inclusion within response frameworks.
