New Burundi Legal Analysis: A Groundbreaking Resource for Aid Agencies
I’m thrilled to share that our Burundi Legal Analysis 2025 is now live — and it’s one of the most exciting pieces of work we’ve produced this year.
This isn’t just a legal review. It’s the result of extensive consultation with LGBTQIA+ civil society groups across Burundi, many of whom are operating under incredibly difficult conditions. Their insights, courage, and lived experience are at the heart of this document.
Burundi is home to over 300,000 forcibly displaced people, and we estimate that around 15,000 of them are from SOGIESC minority communities. Yet, these individuals are almost entirely excluded from humanitarian programming. Our analysis explores why — and more importantly, how we can change that.
The document offers clear, actionable recommendations for aid agencies, including:
- How to partner with LGBTQIA+ cooperatives and CSOs
- What kinds of programming are legally permissible
- How to navigate risk and build inclusive services
It’s designed to be practical, strategic, and rooted in the realities of Burundi’s legal and political landscape. If you’re working in humanitarian response, development, or policy and rights.
